2019 Winner:
I presented the first award on November 22, 2019, in Vilnius, Lithuania, at the yearly
CartoCon of the Lithuanian Cartographic Society, of which I am a member. The winning
presentation for 2019 was by Danas Augutis of the Lithuanian Nature Fund
(Lietuvos gamtos fondas), analyzing trees in Kaunas Oak Forest, and proposing
treatment and maintenance to keep the trees in good shape.
As Danas said in his application: (Translated to English)
"Kaunas Oak Forest (is probably the only broadleaf forest of this size in Europe,
surrounded by the city. The main value of the park is the mature oaks, which delight park
visitors and are an important habitat for rare and endangered organisms included in
Lithuania’s Red Book of endangered species. However, every year some old trees die in the
oak tree due to age, human activity or poor maintenance.
"In the summer of 2019 the Lithuanian Nature Foundation evaluated the condition of old
trees in Kaunas Oak. This study is the first comprehensive ecological assessment of the
condition of old trees, where most of the trees in the park have been described, their
condition and conservation work according to a unified methodology. Almost 500 oak
trees, linden trees and other trees growing in Kaunas oak have been described. This series
of maps summarizes information collected during research on old trees in the park. Its
purpose is to clearly and clearly represent the collected information about the trees, their
condition, and the maintenance work required.
"The series of maps will be used to plan the management of the oak trees and to inform the
public about valuable trees and their condition. The maps are presented in a presentation
format for conferences, seminars or workshops. The maps have been prepared as part of
the project "Creating an ecological network for mature tree dependent organisms." Taking
care of old trees will save many endangered species of animals, plants and fungi!"

"Kauno ąžuolynas – bene vienintelis Europoje tokio dydžio plačialapių miškas, žaliuojantis
miesto apsuptyje. Pagrindinė parko vertybė – brandūs ąžuolai, kurie džiugina parko
lankytojus ir yra svarbi buveinė retiems ir nykstantiems organizmams, įrašytiems į
Raudonąją knygą. Vis dėl to, kasmet dėl amžiaus, žmogaus veiklos ar blogos priežiūros
ąžuolyne žūsta po keletą senųjų medžių.
"2019 m. vasarą Lietuvos gamtos fondas vertino senųjų medžių būklę Kauno ąžuolyne. Ši
studija - pirmas išsamus ekologinis senųjų medžių būklės įvertinimas, kai pagal vieningą
metodiką aprašyta didžioji dalis parko medžių, įvertinta jų būklė bei išsaugojimui
reikalingi darbai. Iš viso aprašyti beveik 500 ąžuolyne augančių senųjų ąžuolų, liepų ir
kitų medžių. Ši žemėlapių serija apibendrina tyrimų metu surinktą informaciją apie
senuosius parko medžius. Jos tikslas – suprantamai ir aiškiai pavaizduoti surinktą
informaciją apie medžius, jų būklę, reikalingus tvarkymo darbus. Žemėlapių serija bus
naudojama planuojant ąžuolyno medžių tvarkymo darbus bei informuojant visuomenę
apie vertingus medžius ir jų būklę.

In mid-2019 I decided to sponsor a yearly cash award of 500 Euros, to be given to a resident of Lithuania, for the best
environmental-themed map depicting a problem in Lithuania, a map whose dissemination I hope will raise awareness
and a drive for remediation.

The Lithuanian Cartographic Society disseminated its promotional poster in the Spring,
soliciting submissions for the 2020 award. I presented the second award, virtually, on
December 11, 2020, to Marijus Pileckas (marijus.pileckas@gmail.com),
(https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Marijus_Pileckas), lecturer at Vytautas Magnus
University, Kaunas, focusing on wetlands, the environment, and water resources
management. His maps were created as part of a European Union-funded project
(translated to English): "Reduction of the negative impact of alien invasive plant
species on ecosystems and human well-being in the Lithuanian-Belarusian
border region."
